When you feel you have no choice it’s a trauma!

When you feel that you should, you may feel that you do not have a choice. Perhaps the choices that exist seems unacceptable, especially if people would be hurt.

When you feel that you should, it is because of your personal values. You define what ‘right’ is for you.  When you feel you ‘should’ it is because you want to do the ‘right’ thing.

Often ‘should’ means your values are in conflict, because the ‘should’ is not what you want, but what you feel you must do to feel ‘right.’  

If you’re trapped in ‘should’ does that mean you’re trapped in trauma?  Not at all.  The key to avoiding trauma is to understand that you are making a choice.  You choose your values.  You choose what right is for you.  Therefore, the ‘should’ you feel is a product of who you are, and your integrity.

Sometimes you’ll even make a choice that causes you pain, to align with your values.  If you feel a lot of pain and a lot of uncomfortable ‘should’s maybe it’s time to examine your values.  Are you really living what you believe is right, or have you fallen into a habit of meeting the expectations of others?

When you are aware of your values and why you make your choices, you protect yourself from trauma.
